(47) Commitment & Guidance

The following is a thought that I picked up from Pastor Ken Smith of the Reformed Presbyterian Church. I am putting it in my own words with a different set of scriptures.

(1) Paul

Now when we heard these things, both we and those from that place pleaded with him not to go up to Jerusalem. Then Paul answered, “What do you mean by weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” ~ Acts 21:12-13

~ So, Paul is on a mission to go to Jerusalem. However, a good many people try to persuade him not to on account of the dangers prophesied. Yet Paul is determined. He is committed.

(2) Ruth

“When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.” ~ Ruth 1:18

~ Naomi is headed back to Judah. Ruth says she is going with her and that that is final. Naomi tries to persuade her otherwise, but Ruth is going. Naomi’s God (YHWH) will be her God. Her people, Ruth’s people.

The point, which I picked up from Pastor Ken Smith from his Daniel sermon is the following:

~~> Commitment leads to guidance, although

~~~~> Guidance does not necessarily lead to commitment.
~ When Paul stayed committed to stay the course, we see
The Lord Himself, giving him guidance: “But the following night the Lord stood by him and said, “Be of good cheer, Paul; for as you have testified for Me in Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness at Rome.” ~ Romans 23:11
And also…
The Lord guiding him providentially via his nephew’s discovery of a plot against him.
~ When Ruth stayed committed we saw
The Lord guiding her providentially: “Now they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of barley harvest.” ~ Ruth 1:22
(3) Judas demonstrated that guidance does not necessarily lead to commitment,
