(44) To Trust is Not Necessarily to Love

In Shakespeare’s All’s Well That Ends Well, the Countess of Roussillon says something interesting to her son, Bertram:

“Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none…”

~ I want to connect that with a verse in the Bible, viz., John 2:24

“But Jesus himself did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people…”

~ Here is the thought:

When it comes to God, trust and love are inseparable. To fail to trust is to fail to love and to fail to love is also to fail to trust.

~ Not so when it comes to people. Jesus certainly loved people, but this does not mean, He trusted everyone.

Meaning, when it comes to people, love and trust are not necessarily inseparable.

An uncle of mine was in charge of an orphanage, back in India. At that orphanage, one of the orphans got caught stealing something. My uncle said of that orphan,

“I can give a person your love, but I cannot give you my trust.”

~ Trust and love do not always coincide, when it comes to earthly human affairs.
