~ Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven. ~ Matt 18:21-22
Offense is often taken when one is sinned against. Why? A sin is something done with will and intention. It by definition does not happen accidentally. Responsibility looms. Yet, Jesus says to forgive 7*70 times.
On the other hand however, there are flubs, glubs, goofs, gaffes, . . . errs, errors, mistakes, snafus, solecisms (huh?), faux pas and so on. If we are honest, we also at times take offense at these, even if they are pure accidents (e.g. A schlemiel spilling the soup and a schlimazel landing on it). What of these?
Perhaps 7*70*700.
Here is an additional thought:
A thought that can be added to all these, is this – If we are not forgiving, then why should God be forgiving to us? I mean if we are not forgiving, and God decides not to be forgiving to us, then is He not holding us to our own standard?
